Перед тем, как написать и отправить поздравление, обязательно выясните, какие именно праздники будет отмечать ваш адресат.

e-Mail или рукописный вариант?

Если e-mail — ваш единственный способ общения с адресатом вашего поздравления, либо вы не можете себе позволить отправить почтовое сообщение ввиду его дороговизны — поздравление по электронной почте вполне приемлемо. Но не забудьте о том, что даже в электронных сообщениях к адресату лучше обращаться по имени. Если ваше поздравление начинается со слов «Дорогой клиент!» (“Dear Customer!”), с тем же успехом оно могло бы открываться обращением «Дорогой незнакомец!» (“Dear Stranger!”).

У вас есть почтовые адреса тех, кого вы хотите поздравить, и вы можете себе позволить расходы на почтовую пересылку? Подпишите открытку. Но при выборе открытки постарайтесь предугадать, какой эффект она произведет на получателя — например, открытки на религиозный сюжет не стоит отправлять деловому партнеру.

Christmas is Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. For millions of Christians throughout the world it is the happiest and the busiest time of the year. No one knows the exact date of Christ"s birth but most Christians celebrate Christmas on December 25. The word Christmas comes from Christes masse, an early English phrase that means Mass of Christ.

People of different countries celebrate Christmas in various ways. People in the United States and Canada decorate their homes with Christmas trees, wreaths and ornaments. City streets are filled with coloured lights; the sound of bells and Christmas carols can be heard everywhere.

Children write letters to Santa Claus and tell him what presents they would like to get. Many department stores hire people to wear a Santa Claus costume and listen to children"s requests. People send Christmas cards to relatives and friends. Many companies give presents to their employees.

A Christmas tree is one of the main symbols of Christmas in most homes. Relatives and friends may join in trimming the tree with lights, tinsel, and colourful ornaments. Presents are placed under the tree. On Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, families open their presents.

Many children believe that Santa Claus arrives on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer and brings presents. Some children hang up stockings so Santa Claus can fill them with candy, fruit and other small gifts.

In many parts of the United States and Canada groups of people walk from house to house and sing Christmas carols. Some people give singers money or small gifts or invite them for a warm drink.

Many people attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. They listen to readings from Bible and singing Christmas carols.

A traditional Christmas dinner consists of stuffed turkey, ь mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and a variety of other dishes. Some families have ham or roast goose instead of turkey. Pumpkin pie, plum pudding, and fruitcake are favourite desserts.

Christmas is the year"s most celebrated holiday. It is celebrated on December 25th by Catholic Church and on January 7th by Orthodox Church. The meaning of Christmas is to recognize Christ"s birth, of which the exact date is not known. During the fourth century the Bishop of Rome set December 25th as Christ"s birth date. Some authorities claim that the choice of December 25th was made because it coincided with Chanukah, Mithraic"s feast of the sun god, and the people of northern Europe"s winter solstice feast. The winter solstice is the time of year in the Northern Hemisphere when the noon sun appears to be farthest south.

The Saturnalia was celebrated for seven days, during the period of time when the winter solstice occurred. During this time, slaves were given freedom, gifts were exchanged, and banquets prevailed.

Holiday evergreens, the symbol of eternal life, have long been used for Christmas time decorations. The Christmas wreath represents everlasting life and God"s endless love for us. Kissing under mistletoe supposedly started out when enemies stopped fighting when they met under mistletoe. Holly is the most known Christmas greenery, and there are several legends about it, one is that Jesus* crown was made of holly, and the holly berries* represented his blood.

Christmas day

Christmas is a Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is based on the Biblical event described in Luke 2 and Matthew 1-2 of the New Testament. Luke tells the story of how an angel appeared to shepherds and told them that a Saviour had been born to Mary and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem. Matthew tells of the Three Wise Men of the East (the Magi) who followed a wondrous star, which led them to the new-born child, whom they presented with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The majesty and poetry of these lovely verses has won the hearts of listeners throughout the ages.

Despite the fact that the Eastern Christian churches had earlier settled on the date of January 6th to celebrate Christmas, the Roman Church set that of December 25 t h as the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ. Perhaps this was in order to have it replace the important pagan Roman festival Natalis Invicti Solis (Birth of the Unconquered Sun). The word "Christmas" comes from the term Christes masse, meaning Christ"s Mass. So, in the western tradition, January 6th became the Epiphany or Twelfth Night, the date when the Magi arrived with gifts for the Christ child. This served as inspiration for the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and its generous list of presents from someone"s true love.

Indeed, to people all over the world, Christmas is a time of gathering with loved ones and of giving and receiving presents.

Some families open their presents on Christmas Eve, December 24th, to the glow of a crackling fire and "White Christmas," "Jingle Bells," and other even older Christmas carols such as "Silent Night," "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," and "The Wassail Song," playing softly in the background.

Some families attend the Christmas Eve service or Mass at their church. In 1939 another Christmas hero appeared in the united States alongside Santa, when Robert L. May published his touching and humorous story about "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Mien Johnny Marks wrote the words and music to the song of the same name, well, Rudolph did indeed "go down in history," becoming a Christmas symbol as familiar as any other.

Perhaps no other holiday has developed a set of customs and symbols as rich and varied as that of Christmas.

The custom of hanging stockings on the mantel to be filled with treats and presents is said to have originated in Norway. Pagan tribes from Northern Europe contributed their sacred evergreens and the custom of decorating them with toys, nuts, and candles. Because of strict fire safety laws in the United States the candles have almost universally been replaced with coloured lights, very often designed to flash on and off in intervals, which tends to entrance some and annoy others.

Other ornaments and symbols found decorating the Christmas tree are glass bulbs in numerous colours and shapes, peppermint candy canes, wreaths, bells, fluffy white "angel"s hair", or shiny tinsel (thin strips of metal foil) are often strewn over the boughs as finishing touches. The tree is usually crowned with a bright star or the graceful figure of the Christmas angel.

Decorating the house with "boughs of holly" is a custom, which comes from England. Holly is a bush with shiny red berries and glossy leaves with a characteristic shape and sharp pointy edges. Because it remains green throughout the year it was believed to hold a promise that the sun would return.

Mistletoe is another Christmas symbol. It is an interesting green parasitic plant, which grows in globe-like formations high up in the branches of oak trees. Sprigs of it are tied together with ribbons and hung up in doorways. By custom anyone standing under the mistletoe gets to be kissed. This certainly adds to the warmth of the season!

Christmas Celebration

Christmas is the happiest time for children. For about a month before Christmas they begin carol-singing. They go from door to door and sing carols. People listen to them and give them little presents: cakes, sweets, biscuits and so on. In Russia there is also the same tradition.

There is a tale that Santa Claus or Father Christmas gets into houses through chimneys and puts presents for the household and especially for children into the stockings which he finds on his way.

The children believe in this legend and prepare the stockings for presents. Usually, they put them not far from the chimney, under the Christmas trees or near their beds. Late at night on Christmas Eve their parents crawl to the stockings and fill them with Christmas presents. Christmas Day is a family holiday. Most people prefer to stay at home. Children and grown-ups unpack their presents, enjoy and show them to each other.

Then the time of Christmas dinner comes. It consists of numerous delicious dishes.

There are stuffed geese or turkeys, Christmas puddings, sauces on the tables. The air is full of tasty smell of roasting poultry.

Around five o"clock the candles are lit on the Christmas trees and the Christmas cakes are cut and eaten with cups of tea. It is a wonderful time for families.

The traditions of celebration can also be different. For example, in Canada and the United States children write letters to Santa Claus before Christmas describing what they would like to get as a present. People richly decorate their houses and the Christmas tree, send cards to relatives and friends, prepare festive meals for the Christmas dinner. Presents are usually placed under the tree. In Britain children find their presents in special stockings, which are hang over the fireplace.

Christmas Day is a formal holiday in many countries. It is regarded not only as a public holiday, but also as a major festival. Along with such holiday as Easter, Christmas is one of the periods of highest annual church attendance. People hold religious processions or parades. In many Catholic countries joyous carols can be heard everywhere on the days preceding Christmas.

The practice of decorating houses on Christmas has a long history. Nativity scenes have been seen back in the 10 th century in Rome. Starting from the 15 th century this tradition became widely spread in London. The heart-shaped leaves of ivy and evergreen holly were used a lot in decorations. They were meant to protect the houses from pagans and witches and to denote the coming of Jesus to earth.

Today, the traditional colours of Christmas are red, green and gold. While red symbolizes the blood of Jesus, green has the meaning of eternal life. That’s why the evergreen tree is used for decorations. The colour of gold symbolizes royalty and associates with one of the three gifts of the Magi. Apart from evergreen plants, traditional decorations for Christmas include lights and street banners, bells and candles, stockings and candy canes, wreaths and angels.

An important part of Christmas is a traditional family meal. The food served for this meal greatly differs from country to country. For example, in Sicily families prepare 12 kinds of fish for Christmas dinner. Traditional British meal includes roast turkey or goose, cider, meat, gravy, mince pies and pudding for dessert. Traditional main course in Eastern Europe is either fish or lamb. In such countries as Germany and France people prefer pork or goose. Italians like cooking special tarts and cakes. The Maltese prepare a chocolate and chestnut beverage.

Christmas is associated with a number of figures, such as Santa Claus, Ded Moroz, Babbo Natale, Sinterklaas, Joulupukki, etc. Perhaps, the best known of all is a Santa Claus. He is a jolly, white-bearded man, dressed in red, who is believed to bring desired presents for kids. Although Saint Nicholas was a bishop from Turkey, the modern image of Santa Claus originated in New York.

Every country has its own customs and traditions. English people are proud of their traditions and they keep them up. It is difficult to speak about England without speaking about its holidays. Christmas Day is among them.

All English people celebrate Christmas (or X-mas) on the 25th of December. What kind of holiday is it? It is the yearly celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It falls on December 25 by the Catholic Church and on the 7th of January by the Orthodox Church. This holiday means the beginning of the new year and the new life.

English people celebrate this holiday with the evergreen tree - Christmas tree. Children rut along sock, called a Christmas stocking at the end of their beds and Santa Claus conies down the chimney to bring them presents.

Christmas Day is the greatest holiday in England. It is interesting to visit the shops before this holiday. There are a lot of nice Christmas cards and presents there. English people like this holiday very much and prepare for it beforehand. They buy presents for each other, try to send Christmas cards for their relatives and friends.

It is interesting to visit London during this holiday. There is a Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. We can see many lights, toys and sweets all over this tree. Everywhere you can see slogans "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year".

1. Once upon a time there was a little Bear and Little Bear was trying to write a letter to Santa Clause. For it was after Thanksgiving and Christmas was right around the corner. Little Bear had always been told to write a letter to Santa and make sure that Santa knew what Little Bear needed for Christmas. This year though, Little Bear was just too busy to write a letter, as he had so much to do.

Little Bear was more worried about getting gifts for his mom, dad and all his grandparents that he never had time to stop and think about what he needed. So that letter to Santa never was written.

Little Bear was a kind and thoughtful little bear and he always put others before himself. So he went about making gifts for his parents and grandparents. For his mom he dried hundreds of flowers that he had collected all summer. These he made into a wonderful smelling potpourri, He even found a wonderful, only slightly cracked bowl to put the dried flower pedals in, that his mom would just love to see all winter long. For his dad, he made a fishing lure out of an old wine cork and he painted it like a shark from the ocean. For his grandparents he painted a picture of each of them. He hid the paintings in the woods and covered the paintings with leaves and branches, so that no one would see them and spoil the gift.

2. Now all this was good and most proper for a little bear to be doing, but Santa Clause got worried, for he kept track of all the kids in the world and here it was a week before Christmas and no letter from Little Bear. Why there was a letter from Little Calf, Little Squirrel, Little Lamb, Little Blue Jay and millions of others, but no Little Bear. Santa got worried…

You see Santa knows good children and Santa knew that Little Bear was an good child. So Santa grabbed one of his Reindeer and rode to see if Little Bear was okay.

Santa peeking around a tree trunk found Little Bear painting pictures, making lures and drying flowers. Santa also found that Little Bear was so worn out at the end of the day, that he had no time to write a letter to Santa and tell Santa what he wanted. Santa went back home to the North Pole and thought about what to give a little bear that was too busy making gifts for his family to care about what he wanted for Christmas.

Santa came up with a trick to play on Little Bear. Santa would send Mister Owl to ask him what he wanted. Mister Owl went to Little Bear as he was asked by Santa and presented his question, “What would you like for Christmas, Little Bear?”

3. Little Bear looked up in surprise as he was finishing the painting of his great grandpa bear, just two days before Christmas and he paused a few seconds thinking at the last brush stroke and said, “I guess that I do not need anything! For I have all that any little bear could ever want!” Then Little Bear said, “I have hugs, kisses, lots of food and lots of love! What more do I need?” Then he finished the brush stroke and declared the last painting done. In fact he declared all the gifts done and just in time for Christmas which was just two days away…

4. Mister Owl flew back to Santa in the North Pole and reported what he was told. That left Santa in worse shape than he was. For now he had no idea what to get Little Bear. Then since Christmas was two days off and he had to hurry and get done. Santa put his thoughts on the back burner and hurried to get all the gifts together for all the kids all over the world. All the while not knowing what to get a good Little Bear.

Christmas came and Santa put off going to Little Bears home in the deep woods, until last. In fact Little Bear had just gotten up and everyone in the family was gathered around the Christmas Tree in the house and opened up their gifts. Papa Bear and all the rest noticed that Santa had not been by and they were worried. Little Bear had gifts from all the family and he had good gifts of clothes and toys, but the stocking by the fireplace was empty.

Little Bears gifts to the family were a big hit and Papa Bear was so proud of his new fishing lure that he went immediately and stuck it on his fishing hat. That way he would have it safe until spring came and the rivers and lakes thawed from the winter ice. Momma Bear could not get enough deep sweet breaths of her dried flowers and Little Bears grandparents spent all morning hanging their freshly painted portraits that Little Bear had painted. Everyone was very happy, except Santa never came to the house.

5. Little Bear told everyone why he did not get anything from Santa. As Little Bear said, “I did not ask for anything and I did not want anything, for I have all I need!” Then Little Bear said, “I never wrote a letter to Santa!”

Then as everyone thought about what Little Bear just said. There came a rattle, bang, crunch and boom in the front yard of the Bear home in the woods. They all ran to the windows and looked out to see what had happened. Then what appeared before their eyes as the snow settled from being blown around in a whirlwind. There appeared Santa and his reindeer. Then as they stared with wonder a knock came upon the door.

Little Bear ran to the door, for his family was too shocked to go themselves and politely invited Santa to come inside. Santa stepped inside and asked for pardon that he has interrupted the family day of Christmas. Everyone all stared and Santa took that as an OK that all was right. Then Santa asked to speak to Little Bear for a minute.

Papa Bear shook his head yes and his eyes were as big as tea cups. Santa said, “Little Bear, you never sent me a letter!” Little Bear gulped and thought, “Oops I am in trouble!”

Then Santa went on, “I have never had that happen and when Mister Owl came back to me and said that, “Little Bear said, “I have hugs, kisses, lots of food and lots of love! What more do I need?” I had run out of time to try to think of what to get you, Little Bear. So I decided to come by in person and give you a gift that no other kid will have. For kids love to tell me what they want for Christmas, but you did not want anything!”

6. Santa looked at Little Bear and said, “If your Papa and the rest of your family say OK! I want to take all of you to the North Pole and have you spend Christmas with Mrs. Santa Clause, the elves, the reindeer and I. For we always have a late Christmas after everyone else has theirs!”

Faster than a Little Bear can say, “Yippee!”, the whole family crowded into the sled with Santa and before they knew it they were at the North Pole having a special Christmas…

They had games to play with the elves and they even got to meet Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer. He had a cold and his nose was even redder than normal. They ate so much food that they all felt like their clothes would pop the buttons and Mrs. Santa Clause had tears in her eyes as they all had to leave…

Santa dropped them off at their Bear home in the woods and as the sleigh lifted into the sky they heard, “Ho Ho Ho and Merry Christmas Little Bear!”

Little Bear said later as his mom tucked him in bed, “I got the best Christmas gift in the whole world and I am glad that my whole family was able to share in it.”

Then he said as his tired eyes closed, “There really is a Santa!”
